Galveston locals will have a chance very soon to once again enjoy the parades that are part of the annual Mardi Gras celebration.
Once again this year, the festivities will kick off with the 30th annual Aquarius Seawall parade. This family-friendly event is both a parade and street pageant, and offers fun for people of all ages.
The parade, as its name implies, will take place along the seawall downtown and will feature floats, a Royal Court, marching bands, and many other participants, all of which will be paying homage to Aquarius and celebrating mythology.
There will also be many places to purchase the beads that have become a major part of the celebration. Of course, there will be many opportunities to share them with others as well. There will also be 175 costumed crew members who, in addition to marching and having fun with the crowd, will also be throwing special anniversary beads and cups.
Those planning to attend the parade should dress for the weather and may want to bring their best camera for picture taking for later possible use in poster printing.
The parade will be held Saturday, January 30. It will begin at 25th Street then turn downtown along Mechanic and Strand Streets. It will run from approximately 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm. There is no cost to attend, and celebrants are encouraged to avoid driving downtown as roads will be blocked.
