Galveston runners to race on beach

The Galveston Sand Crab race will be returning this September, providing a unique experience of racing at night on the island’s beaches.

The event will feature various categories of race, including five- and ten-kilometer distances as well as a “Kid’s Mile.” Parents will be able to run along with their children free of charge, and there will also be course marshals. All races will be chip-timed, with recognition for the fastest finishers. There will also be a generous time cut off for those looking to walk the distance.

The route will take place after sunset, with LED lights along the trail to create a unique experience. Runners will also be required to wear headlamps or carry flashlights to ensure safety. There will also be two hydration stations with sports drinks and water along the race path. The day will conclude with a post-race party, with beer provided from sponsor Galveston Island Brewing as well as other refreshments.

All finishers will receive a finisher’s medal, with special awards for the fastest time at each combination of distance, gender and age group. Athletic events like this often turn to printing services or trophy makers to provide mementos of athletic triumphs, whether they be top times or just personal bests.

The 2025 Galveston Sand Crab race will take place on the evening of September 6 , with the route beginning and ending at R. A. Apffel East Beach Park Pavilion.
