Galveston Island will be recognizing black history and culture, with various events commemorating the freeing of over 250,000 slaves here in Galveston on June 19th, 1865.
On Memorial Day, last year’s Miss National Juneteenth will be the honored guest at the Freedom Walk Tour. The walk will retrace the Union Soldiers’ steps as they spread the freedom message through Galveston. The tour taking place from 8:00 am to 9:30 pm on May 30 will begin at Middle Passage Historic Marker, 2200 Harborside Drive.
The Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Avenue M, will host the 25th Annual Juneteenth Banquet Wednesday, June 1 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Senfronia Thompson, State Representative, will be the guest speaker.
On June 5, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the center will host the annual Juneteenth Inc. Scholarship Gala, where National Miss Juneteenth 2022 will be crowned. Pictures taken at events such as this often go to Print shops to be included in the city’s promotional material for the following year’s festivities.
June 12 will see a Juneteenth Poetry Festival hosted, featuring creative writing workshops, poetry events, and readings by internationally and nationally acclaimed authors and poets. It will take place at the Juneteenth Legacy Project Headquarters, 2217 Strand Street.
Juneteenth Parade (1:00 pm to 2:00 pm) and Picnic (2:00 pm to 5:00 pm) at Wright Cuney Park, 718 41st Street will be June 18 beginning at 2601 Avenue H.
