Galveston Santas will be on the run

The holidays would not be complete this year without the Fourth Annual Santa Hustle Half Marathon and 5K Run.

This year the new tradition will be held in a couple of weeks into December. Locals can be part of the thousands of Santas racing through the city’s streets and along the oceanfront.

Participants will be able to burn calories as they run, and pack on more as they munch on Christmas cookies and candy that will be offered along the route. Holiday music will be broadcast along the route to get everyone in the Christmas mood.

For those who do not have Santa togs, costumes and beards can be purchased online at the Santa Hustle store. Those who will be watching the race will want to get some banner printing done as soon as possible in order to show support for their favorite Santas.

Every year the race donates part of the proceeds to a deserving charity in our area. This year’s charity will be the Galveston Food Bank, which gives out approximately 5.7 million pounds of food a year to the 17.6% of our area’s population that lives below the poverty line.

The event is scheduled for December 20 at Saenterfest Park, 2302 Strand St., Galveston. The Half Marathon will start at 8:00 am and the 5K will commence soon after at 8:30 am. Parking will be free along the side streets and at the 2100 Market Street Parking Garage.
