Galveston runners gear up for marathon

The Galveston Marathon & Half Marathon will take place in mid-February.

Events will include a wheelchairs’ and handcycles’ start time, the marathon and ½ marathon, a Galveston 5K and a kids’ one mile run.

The event will be a Boston Marathon qualifier and runners will receive technical long sleeve shirts and finishers’ medals.

The popular 5K will be limited to the first 300 registrants. Finishers’ medals and short-sleeved shirts sporting the event’s graphic design will be handed out to all 5k runners.

Age groups for the marathon will be in five-year increments, starting with the 15 through 19-year-old category and ending with the 80 and over. The half marathon and 5K will also have the same categories, but the beginning age for the first division will be 14 years and younger.

The course for both the marathon and the half marathon will be fast and flat, and it is USA Track and Field (USATF) certified. A six-hour time limit has been placed on the marathon but none on the half marathon. However, all runners in the marathon must reach the second loop within three hours.

The event will take place at Stewart Beach Park, 201 Seawall Blvd. on February 17. Start time for the wheelchairs and handcycles will be 7:15 am, the marathon and half marathon will begin at 7:30 am; the 5K starts at 7:45 am, and the kids set off at 7:50 am.
