It will soon be time for the Victorian holiday festival ‘Dickens on the Strand’. The street festival will once again resemble 19th-Century Victorian London and will feature strolling carolers, roaming musicians, parades, jugglers, bagpipers and entertainment on five stages. This will mark the 43rd anniversary of the event.
Costumed peddlers will be selling holiday drink, food, Victorian-inspired clothing, crafts, jewelry, and holiday decorations from street stalls and rolling carts. Dickensian characters, visitors from London’s Dickens Museum, and Queen Victoria and her entourage will be meandering through the crowded streets.
Those guests who come in Victorian attire will get into the event for half price. Pictures taken of loved ones can still make it into this year’s Holiday Cards.
A Fezziwig Friday party will get things started. Jane Dickens Monk, a descendant of Charles Dickens, will host this part of the festival. There will be raffle prizes, live entertainment, and drinks concocted especially for the evening.
Holiday handbell concerts are always a favorite and sell out quickly. They are performed at St. Joseph’s Church on December 2 at 5:30, 7:00, and 8:30 pm. Reservations will be required.
Dickens on the Strand will run December 2, 3, and 4. The Fezziwig Friday will take place between Strand and Mechanic streets on 22nd Street from 5:00 to 9:00 pm on December 2. On the Saturday, the festival will run from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm, and Sunday from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm.
