Galveston pays homage to shrimp

The 10 Annual Galveston Island Shrimp Festival will be two days of friends, music and shrimp to end the month.

The Galveston Island Shrimp Festival Official Shrimp Scamper 5k Fun Run will usher in the festival at 28th and Seawall. The route will be an out-and-back along water side of Seawall Blvd. Tickets will include registration, event tee-shirts featuring the event Logo Design and three beverages. The $46 tickets can be purchased until September 18th when they go up to $56. For another $10 a Gumbo Tasting cup can be included.

Over 35 teams are vying for the Shrimp Gumbo Champion cash prize of $1,000. Early registrants will receive five VIP tickets to the Sponsor Party, one bag of Doguet’s Rice, five pounds of Shrimp donated by Galveston Shrimp Company, general admission tickets to Mardi Gras Galveston and discounted parking. One chef cook apron per team is going to the first 40 teams to preregister.

Many festival goers will be going on the Gumbo Stroll. This will be four hours of live music, cold refreshments and plenty of gumbo for tasting. Guests can vote for the Best Team showmanship award.

The Lil Shrimps Parade will step off Saturday at 3:00 pm. Floats, marching units, local police, and firemen accompanying their vehicles will be marching through the Strand.

The festival is scheduled for September 28 and 29 in Saengerfest Park at 2302 Strand, beginning at 9:00 am.
