Galveston observes ghost of Christmas past

Early in December, Dickens on the Strand will once again turn the Strand into 19th Century Victorian London, which will resemble those scenes on many Holiday Cards.

The street festival will have six stages featuring nonstop entertainment, parades, strolling musicians and carolers, jugglers, and bagpipes.

Vendors in vintage costumes will be pushing their carts through the streets hawking their wares. Some will be selling vintage clothing, holiday gifts, decorations and jewelry. Others will be peddling holiday beverages and food.

The Dickens Champagne Reception will take place the evening before the festival. The public is invited to meet two of Charles Dickens descendants in the 1892 Bishop’s Palace. Also at the Bishop’s Palace will be a Dickens Soiree the following evening, and 1859 St. Joseph’s Church will be the location for three Holiday Handbell Concerts.

Fuzziwig Friday will be the kickoff party that will have live entertainment and specialty drinks. During the evening, there will be a Dickens Reading, a one-man ‘Christmas Carol’ recitation, a magic show, the Pickled Brothers Circus, and the Bilge Pumps.

For two days of the festival, guests can enjoy breakfast at 1859 Aston Villa and A Salute to Sunset on the 1877 tall ship Elissa. Saturday night will be the Pickwicks’s Lanternlight Parade.

Dickens on the Strand will be Friday, December 1st, from 5:00 until 9:00 pm; Saturday, December 2nd from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm; and Sunday, December 3rd from noon until 6:00 pm.
