Galveston goes to the beach for sandcastle competition

The 34th AlA Sandcastle competition will return to Galveston toward the end of August. This will be a fundraiser for the ArCH Foundation and AlA Houston, and a major one for the City of Galveston.

Nancy Guerrero won this year’s 2021 AlA Sandcastle Competition Logo competition with her black, pink, green, blue, and white Logo Design.

Over 60 sandcastle-building teams have signed up for the grueling five-hour sculpting event. Judges will be looking for originality, carving technique, technical difficulty, artistic execution, and site usage. The winning team will receive the coveted Gold Bucket. Awards will also be given in several categories. Some of these will be Pop Culture, Architectural Icon, Traditional Castle, and Nursery Rhymes. Others will be Kidtastic, Animal Kingdom, and Greatest Feat of Structural Ingenuity.

The public will get to choose their favorites, and other awards will go to the best team T-shirt graphic design, team signage, and costumes.

The beach opens for sponsors and teams at 8:30 am. At 9:00 am the public will be allowed in to watch. From 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, teams create their entries. The public can cast votes for their favorite entries from 1:00 pm until 3:30 pm, and the judges will get their turn from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Awards will be handed out at 4:30 pm.

The contest will be held on East Beach, 1923 Boddeker Road, on August 21 starting at 10:00 am.
