Galveston goes German for fall festival

The 37th Annual Island Oktoberfest is coming soon. This will be a family-oriented weekend with three stages of continuous music, German food and beverages, games, art, crafts and gifts.

Multiple gardens will be holding traditional German beverage tastings, which will be paired with appetizers. Each area will have live music and plenty of dancing.

German food will be served. This will include bratwurst, smoked sausage, knockwurst, and a ‘Wurstabendessen’, which is a German sausage dinner with all the trimmings. Freshly baked Helga’s strudel will be among the homemade desserts.

Entertainment will consist of yodeling, polka and tuba music, German vocals, and a German Choir Show. There will also be a raffle drawing, costume, and stein-holding competitions and a Chicken Dance contest.

A Children’s Activities Area will feature a rock wall, mechanical bull, giant slide, moon walk, pony rides, obstacle course, and jungle play land.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in traditional German attire. Folks at these events like to dress the whole family and take pictures for future poster printing or for family Calendars.

One activity that is always popular is the Cake Wheel. This is a game of chance where the person who picks the lucky number goes home with the cake of his/her choice.

Galveston Island Oktoberfest will be tomorrow, October 26 from 5:00 pm until 11:00 pm, and October 27 from 11:00 am until 11:00 pm on the surrounding grounds of First Lutheran Church on Winnie and 24th.
