The 32nd AIA Sandcastle competition will be coming in late August. The five-hour competition will have over 60 teams vying for the prestigious Golden Bucket and the gold and silver shovels.
Local Galveston organizations and businesses have been busily organizing, designing, and developing strategies for sculpting sandcastles along East Beach.
Golden Bucket Award judges for competition the will be evaluating the sand structures in concept originality, technical difficulty, artistic value, and execution. They will also consider site utilization and carving techniques.
Other awards will be given in the categories of Houston-centric, public favorite, world history, pop culture, superheroes, architectural, traditional castle, and tallest standing structure. There will also be an award for ‘Greatest Feat of Ingenuity’.
Teams will also be competing in T-shirt design competition so every team is creating a graphic design for their team and heading to local Print shops to get their shirts printed.
The beach will open early for sponsors and teams to set up their areas. The public will then be allowed in the area to watch the proceedings. The next five hours will be dedicated to creating the sand masterpieces, after which the public will be given 2½ hours to vote on their favorite entries. Judging will take place over the next hour and a half and the awards ceremony will end the festivities.
The Sandcastle competition will be August 25 at East Beach, 1923 Boddeker. The beach opens at 6:30 am.
