Galveston celebrates the humble shrimp

The Seventh Annual Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival and Outdoors Show is coming in a couple of weeks.

The three-day event will have live music, a cook-off, tasting, official 5K, a parade, and of course plenty of shrimp. Over 20,000 gumbo enthusiasts are expected to attend.

The first evening will have the VIP Sponsor Party, which will include a shrimp dinner, live music and drinks.

To start things off the next morning, Moody National Bank will be presenting its annual official 5K run through the Historic Strand District. Following the 5K awards ceremony, there will be an after party. Then comes the Strand Merchant Walkabout and the Gumbo Tasting. The Galveston Shrimp Company Lil’ Shrimps Parade and the awards ceremony will end the festivities.

The Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off will be Saturday and it will have two divisions - amateur and professional. All teams will be judged by the Gumbo Stroll ticketholders. Local participating restaurants will need to get some poster printing completed in time to display event Posters at the entrances of their establishments.

This event is slated for September 23, 24, and 25 in Historic Strand District on Strand 23rd Street. The VIP party will be Friday night starting at 7:30 pm, the 5K will get going at 9:00 am Saturday, the Gumbo Stroll and Merchant Walkabout will begin at noon, and the parade will step off at 3:00 pm.
