Galveston is set to go into overdrive for the winter holiday season.
Moody Gardens will be presenting its annual Ice Land: Pole to Pole as it turns over two million pounds of ice to skilled master carvers. The result will be a journey from one pole to the other including ice reindeer, walruses, humpback whales, polar bears, and snowy owls. Kids can slide down the giant glacier slide and enjoy drinks inside an igloo. Pictures taken here can still go to local Stationery printers to be included in next year’s family Calendars.
The Gardens will open its Festival of Lights on the same day. This will be a mile-long trail of lighted scenes. The outdoor skating rink and concession area will be open, also.
Another festival of lights will be in downtown and Saengerfest Park. The area will have Christmas lights and illuminated artisan pieces including a giant snow globe and interactive photo frame. For three days Strand Street will be transformed into a Victorian London street for the 45th annual Charles Dickens on the Strand.
The Grand 1894 Opera House will present eight music presentations during the season. Some of these will include Asleep at the Wheel, Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, Charlie Brown Christmas Live, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and Merry Texas Christmas Y’all.
The Moody Gardens events will be from November 17 to January 6, and Opera House events will run November 24 through January 12.
