Early history
The first residents of the area that became Galveston were members of the Akokisa and Karankawa tribes. They called what is now Galveston Island ‘Auia’. The modern name was given to the settlement by José de Evia, a Spanish explorer, who in 1785 called it Gálvez-town or Gálveztown to honor Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, the Count of Gálvez. The name was eventually Anglicized to Galveston.
Oddly enough, it was the pirate Louis-Michel Aury who built the first permanent European settlements here. He used the island as a base from which to support the Mexican rebellion against Spain. Another pirate entered the picture in 1817, when Aury came back from a failed raid against Spain to find Jean Lafitte had occupied Galveston, where he remained until 1821, when the U.S. Navy chased him off.
Galveston has a unique and colorful history, and the Galveston Historical Foundation works hard to preserve it. The Port of Galveston
Part of Galveston’s economic base is its port. The Port of Galveston, which is also known as Galveston Wharves, started in 1825 as a trading post. Today, it has grown to comprise 850 acres located on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, as well as Pelican Island.
The port can handle a variety of cargoes, including containers, liquid and dry bulk cargo, roll-on/roll-off ships, refrigerated cargoes, and breakbulk (cargo like oil and grain that is not shipped in containers, but in individual Boxes, drums, crates, Bags and barrels).
In addition to the cargo vessels, Galveston is also visited by a number of cruise ships that operate in the Caribbean. The Carnival Cruise Line homeports several of its ships in Galveston, and rotates them between here and Port Canaveral, Florida. Ships from the Disney Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean also call at Galveston.
Since cruise ships leave from here, port officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on an information sheet for visitors, showing where ships are berthed and the location of parking lots.
Galveston today
Today, the city is a mecca for vacationers, who come to enjoy the beaches, the sun, and the many cultural offerings Galveston provides. Among the attractions are the Moody Gardens, a botanical park, the Galveston Railroad Museum, and the downtown historic district. The city also boasts a symphony orchestra, a ballet company, and a strong retail sector.
