FeatherFest 2022 scheduled for April

Galveston’s annual FeatherFest will be returning toward the end of April. The week-long event will feature birding and photography field trips, workshops, and an evening social event.

A pre-festival trip will take place April 19 and 20. This will be an excursion to the Beaumont area where two ecosystems - the Pineywoods and the Coastal Marshes - converge. A Rockport Rookery Photo Trip with Larry Ditto is also available.

Species featured in some of the birding field trips will be songbirds, warblers, shorebirds, terns, gulls, and raptors. Kevin Karlson will hold a North American Shorebird Challenge, and Greg Olsen will hold an iNationalist Workshop and Field Trip. Other birding workshops will feature creating pollinator environments and maximizing birding efficiency.

Some photography field trips will include a visit to Sheldon Lake State Park Rookery, Photo Trap Photography, Wildlife Photography from a Car, Exploring A Cemetery, and Environs by Boat. Topics included in photography workshops will be field techniques, flash and supplemental lighting, efficient shooting, and artistic post processing.

Photographers often take colorful bird pictures to local Print shops to be used in custom notecards.

This year’s Evening Social will be Raptors Uncorked and will take place at the 1859 Ashton Villa. A docent-led tour of the house will be conducted at 5:30 pm before the dinner and program begins at 6:00 pm. Six audience members will be chosen to participate in the Raptor Experience show.

Featherfest will take place April 21 to 23.
