Birders and photographers to enjoy annual FeatherFest

Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council will be presenting its 19th annual Galveston FeatherFest in mid-April.

The event marks the northward migration of thousands of birds from South and Central America that travel the “Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.” Over 200 species of brightly-colored birds stop over the Galveston area.

Hundreds of professional, amateur, and new birders and nature photographers attend the annual nature and birding workshops, field trips, and evening socials.

In total, 45 birding field trips will be available. The list begins with a Beaumont Area Birding pre-Festival trip on April 13 that will take guests through the Pineywoods, and another one will be at League City’s Clear Creek. Some trips made during the festival include Pearland Urban Landscape, Seabrook, Aramand Bayou and Rookery, East Galveston, High Island, and West Isle Marsh.

Over 25 nature photography field trips will include the Rockport Rookery, ground level and birds in flight trips, macro photography on Strand Street, Lafitte’s Cove, action shots at Smith Oaks, Shorebird photography, raptor photography, and night photography at Pleasure Pier.

The graphic design on this year’s commemorative royal blue T-Shirts and masks will be the banded piping plover. Masks and shirts can be ordered with registration.

Pictures taken on trips such as these often go to nearby Stationery printers to be made into notecards and personalized Letterheads.

This year’s festival will take place April 15 through 18.
