Texas Music Fest aims to revitalize downtown

A Friendswood-based music event is now on its third edition, and supporters hope to make it the biggest yet.

Two years ago, the Friends of Downtown Friendswood Association was looking for a way to bring attention to their town's core, and hit upon the idea of holding a music festival. The festival was scheduled for March, aimed to run in tandem with Texas Independence Day. The first Texas Music Fest was a humble occasion, held in a shopping center’s parking lot, but it attracted as many as 3,000 spectators.

The 2018 festival, which takes place on March 3 starting at noon, is headlined by veteran south Texas country singer Roger Creager. Other musical acts include Bri Bagwell, Zane Williams, and Two Tons of Steel. The event aims to be family-friendly, and past editions have included kid-friendly games and food vendors.

The past decade has seen a boom in music festivals large and small around the United States and beyond. Big festivals, like Austin's South By Southwest, allow visitors to see a variety of popular artists without having to hunt down expensive tickets for solo concerts. Smaller festivals like Texas Music Fest can be useful in bringing together communities and promoting local culture.
