A special race is coming up in Friendswood.

The League City Rotary Club and the Friendswood Rotary Club are teaming up once again to host the Rotary Regatta on Clear Creek. This event gives those with paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes the chance to test themselves over a seven-mile course.

The course begins at 1776 Park in Friendswood and ends at the Countryside Park in League City. It is open to everyone, from the serious racer to the recreational boater, and offers multiple categories so that watercraft of all types can participate. The race is intended to draw attention to Clear Creek.

Clear Creek and its seven tributaries were identified by the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as sometimes having higher levels of bacteria than those approved by the state for bodies of water used for fishing, wading, swimming, and aquatic life. In response, the Bacteria Implementation Group (BIG) developed a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) document that defined the acceptable levels of contaminants. The TCEQ adopted the study in September 2008, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved it in March 2009.

A TMDL determines the maximum pollutants that can inhabit a body of water before it can no longer be used for its planned purposes. Using the TMDL, sources of pollution can be identified and measures to mitigate them can be developed.

The race is October 16 beginning at 9:00 am. Organizers of events like these can use flyer printing to create informative handouts explaining the issues.
