For Houston area residents, Halloween doesn't have to be the end of the fiendish festivities, because the city has planned a number of large-scale events for December 1 – known in Mexican culture as Dia de los Muertas, or Day of the Dead.

The municipal government, local NGOs, and neighborhood businesses have collaborated to host a series of events. The three days of celebration will culminate in a block party in Houston's historic Magnolia Park neighborhood.

In popular culture, Dia de los Muertas often conjures images of ghosts and skeletons. While there is an opportunity for revelry, Day of the Dead is also a way for people to pay tribute to those they have lost. Attendees are asked to dress respectfully for the occasion. The Magnolia Park event aims to be a family-friendly space where people of all ages can learn about both the Dia de los Muertas and the history of the neighborhood. Included in this cultural education is the chance to participate in collaborative art and get a commemorative photo taken.

The celebration could draw people in from nearby cities like the Woodlands and Friendswood. In addition to the major events, many local businesses will likely be holding their own celebrations, using tools like poster printing or flyer printing to get the word out to the public.
