Thankfully, most people do not fit in a trip to the funeral home as part of their back-to-school shopping expedition, but needy families in the Houston area will do just that as part of a well-established charitable tradition.

The Felix H. Morales Funeral Home is set to give away school supplies to registered families this August, the 21st annual edition of such an event. For lower-income parents, obtaining supplies for the new school year can prove challenging, especially for kids interested in art and graphic design. This event is designed to address that issue.

The giveaway will take place on the morning of August 18 at the funeral home on Canal Street. In addition to vital supplies like note pads and pencils, children can receive immunization shots and sports physicals, performed by CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic. Those interested should register in advance, although organizers note that supplies are distributed on a first come, first served basis, and registration does not guarantee receipt of supplies.

The event is the product of the Angela V. Morales Foundation, created in 1993 to support Latin-American youth in Houston's East End. However, children of all ethnicities and from other parts of Houston, as well as surrounding areas like Friendswood and Pearland, are welcome to register for the school supplies.
