Green event awaits Friendswood

An event that truly gives meaning to going green is set to take place in Friendswood.

In honor of Arbor Day, the city will soon be giving away trees. There are 100 seven-gallon large trees available, as long as the supply lasts. The giveaway is limited to one tree per family. Interested parties must be residents of Friendswood, and they will be required to present a photo ID. Those who want trees will have to take them home, as they will not be delivered.

People have a choice of two trees, the Live Oak, or the Texas Oak. The Live Oak can grow to be 50 feet tall and has a trunk about four feet in circumference. The trunk divides into several large branches forming a crown that can spread over 100 feet, making this a handsome and stately tree that needs significant space to thrive. The wood is tough and heavy, and was previously used in shipbuilding. These trees today are used mostly in landscaping.

The other choice, the Texas Oak, is medium-sized, usually growing to about 35 feet in height, although it can reach 70 feet in certain soils. The wood is often used for posts or fuel, and for landscaping.

The Annual Tree Giveaway is scheduled for January 14 at 8:00 pm, in Centennial Park. The park is at 2200 S. Friendswood Drive. When events of this type are scheduled, organizers can use flyer printing to create instruction sheets for participants.
