In Texas, barbecue is serious business, so it is no surprise that the World's Championship Bar-B-Que contest, held recently as part of the monthlong Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, has become a major event.

The competition is also rigorous: 749 entries by 252 cook teams in four categories, judged by barbecue experts who may, depending on who one asks, have the best job on Earth.

In the end, it was the Buns 'n' Roses team from Friendswood, Texas who took home the top prize, being given first prize for their ribs and awarded the Overall Grand Prize. Other awards went to the Buckshot BBQ brisket, the chicken from Tumble Inn, and Lingon & Dill BBQ Team's "Dutch Oven" desert. Those lucky enough to be invited to one of these tents likely went home with their tastebuds buzzing.

The competition was a feast for more than just tongue and nose though; it also featured a stage full of live music by up-and-coming country artists. A carnival was open for the young at heart. The general entertainment provided a prelude for the upcoming rodeo, with attendees able to leave home with a carnival prize and some promotional products, as well as a full stomach.

The Rodeo had something of a upscale feel this year, with sponsorships from Comcast and Covestro, as well as a bevy of educational programs.
