At the end of this week, the Friendswood Public Library will be finishing up their summer reading program with celebrations for children and youth of all ages.

The End of Summer Party and End of Summer Lock In will put a finish on a fun and engaging season of competitive reading.

The Summer Reading Program at the Library has been the most ambitious program offered to date. Readers have been divvied up into three different age groups: birth to 10, 10 to 18, and 18 and up. Each group was given a set reading goal and ways that they could keep track of their reading.

For the youngest group, progress was measured in Books, with prizes offered for every 10 books read. For the middle group, reading time was instead measured through use of the library’s online reading tracker. In this case, prizes are awarded for every 12 hours read. The adult group were assigned 20 different categories, and the challenge was to read one book from every category.

Prizes for the program ranged from rubber duckies and social media mentions, to pedometers and fit bits. Every resident in Friendswood is eligible, so the library has had a lot of readers to keep track of. Readers in the 10 and under group who have read 20 books and been to at least 3 summer programs at the library are also eligible for an End of Summer Party with prizes, awards, and refreshments. The 10 to 18 group members who have read for at least 21 hours and been to 3 events will be able to attend a Lock In, where they can camp out all night in the library.

The End of Summer Party and Lock in will take place this Friday and Saturday respectively at the Friendswood Public Library, located at 416 S. Friendswood Dr. A full list of prizes, as well as registration for the parties, can be found via the Brochures for each age group.
