Friendswood park goes to the dogs

Residents of Friendswood and nearby canine enthusiasts are hopping with excitement for the Bark in the Park Celebration.

The evening will be a celebration of a large grant that the city has just received, and will include food, entertainment, and some dog-friendly activities.

The grant of $25,000 was given to the city of Friendswood as part of the PetSafe Bark in the Park Promotion. The city had already raised about $15,000, largely through the efforts of Boy Scout Caden Fischer as part of his Eagle Scout project. The PetSafe company was so impressed by his efforts that the city was selected for the largest grant given out. This will allow the city to more than double the amount of fencing it had planned for the dog park - which will be built in Old City Park and completed in 2017 - as well as add in several amenities and obstacle features that were originally planned for later.

The celebration will center on a stage beset with Banners where representatives from the city will first receive an oversized check from PetSafe, followed by a ribbon cutting inaugurating the beginning of work on the park. Afterwards, the band Velvet Punch will play the remainder of the evening. Food trucks will be on site selling many different types of food. Puppy portraits will also be available for visitors interested in a caricature of their canine companion.

The Bark in the Park Celebration will be held on September 16 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stevenson Park, located at 1100 S. Friendswood Dr. Admission is free to the public. Anyone with questions should contact the Parks Department directly.
