Friendswood adults spell for fun at B-E-E

This summer the Friendswood Public Library is offering an interesting change of pace for adults looking for a new challenge.

The First Annual Adult Spelling Bee is a friendly competition aimed at increasing vocabularies and testing knowledge. The rules are not dissimilar to the standard spelling bee in which many people participated during their school days. Participants will receive words to spell that, for which they may ask for a definition and source. They can also have the words repeated.

The difference is mainly in the difficulty level of the words, which will start at the higher levels of the children’s bee book and then proceed through words both obscure and archaic.

To help competitors have the best chance, the Flyers are advertising the opportunity to pick up a book of practice words. For additional help, however, the library is also bringing in champion speller Syamantak Payra every Monday to run special spelling bee workshops to help break down the etymology of words, and give some tips on how to make educated guesses on spelling unknown words.

The First Annual Spelling Bee will be held on August 20 at 2:00 pm at the Friendswood Public Library, located at 416 S. Friendswood Dr. The spelling bee workshops will take place at 6:00 pm every Monday. Cost for participating is free, but events must be signed up for in advance. Interested parties should contact the library directly.
