Cedar Park city officials have announced that previously used technology has been re-introduced as the season for severe weather commences. Spring is recognized in Texas as the season for weather extremes and new measures have been introduced to warn people of tornadoes.
The sirens have been previously used, although it was some time ago. They have now been re-introduced at strategic points across the city to warn of imminent tornadoes. The sirens were put in place at the start of May.
A spokesperson for the city, Jennie Huerta, said that as people tend to gather in parks across the city, the sirens will be most beneficial in those areas. If a tornado is spotted in the area, personnel from an emergency service will start the sirens so that people outdoors will be aware.
Jen Simmons, who is new to the area, believes that the sirens are a good idea, having previously lived in Indiana where they are tested each week. The whole family practices the emergency drill when the siren sounds so that they know what to do if there is a storm.
The Blackboard Connect service is the main tool used to notify people of emergencies in the city. The service can relay a message via email, text, cell phone, or home phone in just a few seconds. The sirens have been placed to supplement the service, especially for those who are outdoors. Each Wednesday, they will be tested and local poster printing services may be utilized to publicize the service and procedures in case of a tornado.
