Cedar Park student cycles 4,500 miles for charity

A former student of Cedar Park High School is taking part in an annual charity bike ride, the Texas 4000.

Rachel Engler, who recently graduated from nursing school at the University of Texas, will be cycling across the U.S. in a grueling bike ride to raise money for her family, and for future patients who she has not yet met.

Cyclists will travel to Anchorage, Alaska from Austin, Texas, covering 4,500 miles. Around $3m has been raised for cancer charities, through riders collecting donations. The journey started on May 31 this year from Austin. The first official stopping point was at Cedar Park, before continuing on to Lampasas to celebrate the start of the cycle ride.

There are three routes permitted for the cycling teams and Engler selected the Sierra route. She will travel, along with her team mates, through Nevada, Arizona, California, Utah, Oregon, and Washington, and then onto a number of Canadian territories. As Engler wants to eventually find work in Oregon or Washington, the route was of particular interest.

On a personal level, Engler volunteered to take part in the cycling challenge following her grandmother’s battle in 2007 with ovarian cancer. She has also been inspired by some of her patients in the oncology unit in which she previously worked.

Local Print companies may have been asked to provide banner printing services to cheer along the cyclists as they travel for approximately 70 days through America. According to Engler, a positive state of mind is crucial for the trek.
