Brazilian flavor to return to Austin

The event known as ‘the largest Carnaval celebration outside of Brazil’ will be returning to Austin this February.

As always, it will feature drinks, partying, Brazilian rhythms, and South American costumes.

The traditional Brazilian Carnaval is a variation of an ancient celebration that took place just before Ash Wednesday. It is known mostly for elaborate costumes and parades, traditional Brazilian music and the dances that accompany it like samba, and of course the wild parties of feasting and drinking. Often, details like this are made known to potential event attendees through poster and flyer printing.

As Carnaval is not celebrated nationwide the US, the Austin Carnaval celebration is not quite on the same scale as in Brazil but is still a sizeable event. Its website describes it as the equivalent of a Big Jump Carnaval or a Ballroom Carnival. It is held in an indoor stadium where an impeccable sound system blasts Brazilian music such as samba, frevo, and trio electro. Multiple guests make their own costumes and wear them to the party, hoping to win the top prize in the costume contest.

This year, the Carnaval celebration will take place at the Concourse Project, which is located at 8509 Burleson Road, on February 5. Tickets cost $35 before the event or $45 at the door. Online purchases of tickets will be sent to recipients via e-mail. More information is available on the Austin Carnaval website.
