In early December, officials from the Austin campus of the University of Texas came up with a unique way to let students know that their tuition and expenses would be covered in full by a scholarship.
Plenty of students worry about how they will pay for school, with many using a combination of their own money, grants, scholarships and loans to cover the expense.
After clearing it with the incoming students' parents, however, UT officials knocked on students’ doors, presenting them with a large check and balloons.
One student who got a surprise from the UT was Jina Kim, a high school senior who lives near Dallas. The University presented her with an oversized check in the amount of $48,000, enough to cover four years of college tuition.
The money comes from an Impact Scholarship, which is usually given to about 30 students annually. These are awarded based on a student's leadership potential, financial need, and a few other factors. UT usually awards the scholarships in the spring, but decided to do so early this year to ease students' minds and to let them know that not only are they accepted to the school, but that they also have a way to pay for it.
School officials who want to create oversized Checks to give students often use area printing companies to create them.
