The German-Texan Heritage Society (GTHS) of Austin will present its annual authentic Oktoberfest celebration in mid-October.
Oktoberfest, the best-known German festivity, has been celebrated for more than a century and some form of the original 16-day event is held in hundreds of communities around the world. The Austin event will feature traditional Bavarian beer, food, and music, plus family activities such as pumpkin painting.
The GTHS owns and operates the historic German Free School which will host Oktoberfest. Located in the city's Red River Cultural District, the school was built in 1857 and is Austin's third-oldest building. It's rammed-earth construction meant it was built to last. In the mid-1800s, because of state funding, the two-room school provided lessons to many of its diverse students for free and, along with other similar schools, led the way in creating Texas's public education system.
This year's Oktoberfest aims to raise money for the recent reconstruction of an historical staircase at the school which will be showcased at the event.
In addition to being home to the heritage society, the building and its terraced gardens provide a venue for other festivals, language and German cultural education classes, and is a noted state landmark.
