Nominations prove Austin's got talent

Nearly 40 high schools in the Austin area received nominations for the annual Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Awards.

The awards categories include Best Production, Best Ensemble, Best Direction, and individual awards for best actors and actresses in leading and supporting roles.

Among the nominees are Akins High School, which is up for Best Production, Best Costume Design and Best Orchestra with ‘Hairspray’; Cedar Ridge High School, which received five nominations for its production of ‘Grease’; and Dripping Springs High School, which got 11 nominations for its production of ‘The Addams Family’.

Altogether, more than 4,000 students participated in some way in the 38 nominated shows.

Schools that received nominations can use banner printing to highlight their achievements.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 18 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Tyler Mount, an alumnus of the Long Center's Summer Stock Austin, a graduate of St. Edwards University in Austin, and the host of ‘The Tyler Mount Vlog’ for Playbill, will the celebrity emcee. Mount has also performed on Broadway.

The awards ceremony is a long one and should be even longer this year, as more shows than ever have been nominated. The ceremony will feature songs from each of the shows, as well as performances from the students nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress.
