The city council of Austin, Texas recently passed an ordinance that it hopes will encourage those in the construction and demolition trade to recycle their waste materials more often.
Starting on October 1 next year, the city will require that there be a 50% diversion of waste materials from building and other construction projects that are over 5,000 square feet. The ordinance will be expanded in 2019 to cover all commercial demolition projects.
The Austin Resource Recovery agency noted that at least 20% of all waste that goes into area landfills is generated by the demolition and construction industry. The hope is that this will drastically lower this amount. The agency further went on to say that the new policy will expand on guidelines that have been endorsed by the Austin Energy Green Building program, and because many of the developments being built that offer affordable housing already comply with these, there should be no impact on the price of affordable housing in the city. There may be a slight increase in building costs, expected to be between 0.1% and 0.2%, for other new projects.
