Destined to be the city’s tallest building, and a noticeable addition to Austin’s skyline, the 58-story Independent will be two stories higher than the high-rise Austonian condominium, which is currently the tallest in the city.
The Independent will provide Austin with an additional 370 luxury condominiums, with prices ranging from the mid-$300,000 up to $3m. The 685-foot tower will be the last piece in the Seaholm District redevelopment.
Formally, the site of the Thomas C. Green Water Treatment Plant and the Seaholm Power Plant, the Seaholm District has been transformed to an attractive mixed-use area. In addition to the proposed Independent Tower the site containing shops, offices, restaurants, a hotel, apartments, a public library, condos, and a Trader Joe’s grocery.
The diverse nature of the Seaholm District provides numerous Austin businesses outside that area with business opportunities, including Print companies, which will no doubt see an increased demand for business card printing as well as other Stationery printing products.
According to city officials the $2bn invested in the area will return millions of dollars in tax revenues, both property and sales, in the coming decades. Included in that is over $62m that will be generated for affordable housing.
