During Texas Veterans Legal Aid Week (TVLAW) eligible veterans will be able to received free legal advice and services in various Texas cities, among which is Austin.
Held in honor of Veterans Day, TVLAW is a state-wide effort to show Texas’ appreciation to her veterans. The Lone Star State has the second-highest population of veterans in the country and many veterans’ quality of life is adversely affected by unresolved legal issues. An annual survey conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ showed that among the unmet needs of present and past homeless veterans, three out of their top ten were legal issues.
The Texas Access to Justice Foundation is coordinating TVLAW, which takes place November 9-13. Throughout the state that week, local bar associations, legal aid programs, law schools, and private lawyers will offer pro bono civil legal services. Additionally, in the days preceding and following the week of November 9-13 several cities will host events. In Austin, one such event is being held by the Austin Bar Foundation at the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic from 1:30 – 4:00 pm on November 9.
Informing veterans of help that is available to them is a challenge that a flyer and poster printing service is well equipped to handle. Among the civil legal issues veterans may seek help with during TVLAW are difficulty with receiving benefits, denial of critical medical care, family law matters resulting from deployment and legal issues arising from disabilities.
