Austin got the magazine’s approval for its progressive rescue and adoption programs and the prize money will be given to Austin Pets Alive; a no-kill adoption center.
Dog Fancy editor Ernie Slone said:

Cities are nominated by Dog Fancy readers, after which the magazine’s staff conducts research and determines the winning city. Among the criteria used are the quantity of veterinarian specialists, rescue programs, pro-dog legislation, dog-friendly businesses, presence of canine activities, and dog parks.
Austin is home to a dozen dog parks, numerous pet-friendly hiking trails, and several swimming venues in which dogs are permitted. Additionally, as Dog Fancy magazine discovered, many Austin businesses throughout the city provide patio space for dogs whose owners want their four-legged friends to accompany them.
