The area around Austin experienced the fastest increases in population of any area in the U.S. last year, according to estimates made by the Census Bureau.
The report, released in late May, stated that three cities within 30 miles of the State Capital were included on the top 10 list of U.S. cities experiencing the most rapid growth. Cedar Park, Georgetown, and San Marcos were the places in question, and were ranked against other cities with more than 50,000 residents.
Indeed, the Census Bureau’s findings show that the whole state of Texas is expanding. Of the 15 fastest growing cities, seven were in Texas. Austin gained nearly 21,000 residents, which was more of an increase in people than any other city with fewer than a million residents.
Contributing to Austin’s growth have been its position as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’, the University of Texas at Austin, and Texas state government offices. The state, as a whole, incurred more month-to-month job gains for the month of April, as well as having an unemployment rate of 5.2% compared to the national average of 6.3%.
