In 1988, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, and guitarist James Iha, and joined forces with Billy Corgan, a guitarist who became their frontman, to form Smashing Pumpkins, based in Chicago. Despite a breakup, reformation, and other changes, this extremely successful outfit has sold in excess of 30 million records all over the world.
Punk rock was a huge influence on music at the time Smashing Pumpkins got started, but the new group didn’t go down that path. Instead, they mixed genres including shoegaze, psychedelic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, gothic rock, progressive rock, and then a bit later, electronica, into a sound that was entirely their own. Smashing Pumpkins’ style helped bring alternative rock into the mainstream.
Their own success was aided by the increasing popularity of grunge rock, and they finally made it into the mainstream in 1993 with their album “Siamese Dream.” The album, which enjoyed sales of more than four million Copies in the U.S., opened at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. A concert review says:
“. . . the group delivered a tour of its 30-plus year songbook that was simply a fine, solid rock 'n' roll show . . .”
Smashing Pumpkins and their “The World is a Vampire” Tour will land in Franklin on September 8 at the FirstBank Amphitheater. Events like this can be promoted when organizers use poster printing.
