Orchestra announces new season

The Gateway Chamber Orchestra, which performs in Franklin, recently confirmed its schedule for the season.

This year, the orchestra offers its four-concert Masterworks Series. The schedule begins with Lorna McGhee's playing Carl Reinecke's “Flute Concerto.” Also on that program are the “Pelléas and Mélisanda Suite” by Gabriel Fauré, and the “Symphony No. 4 in C minor” by Franz Schubert. McGhee is the principal flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

The second concert features “Transfigured Night (Verklärte Nacht)” by Arnold Schoenberg; “Danses” by Claude Debussy, featuring Paula Bressman on the harp; and “Ancient Airs and Dances Set III” by Ottorino Respighi. Bressman is the Gateway Symphony's principal harpist, and often plays with the Nashville Symphony.

The third concert brings the “Nocturno” by Felix Mendelssohn; the “Serenade in Bb, K. 361/370a Gran Partita” by Mozart; and the “Cello Concerto” by Jacques Ibert, with Meghan Berindean as the soloist. Berindean is a professor of music and often also plays with several orchestras, including the Charleston Symphony.

The final performances are part of the orchestra's 2nd Annual America's Haydn Festival. The works to be performed include the “Symphony No. 49 in F minor—La Passion” and the “Lord Nelson Mass.”

All concerts begin at 7:30 pm. The first concert is on September 30; the second on November 4; the third takes place on January 27; and the final performances will take place April 3 and April 6. The Franklin Theatre is the concert venue.
