Franklin event to be a hoot

Whoooo-ever is curious about nature has an opportunity to learn more about a beloved bird of prey, at a class near Franklin this fall.

Owl's Hill Sanctuary in Brentwood, a few miles from Franklin, is a private nature preserve that offers intriguing programs about the natural world. Access is restricted to the facility so that the fragile habitat and wildlife can be protected, but special programs, guided tours, workshops, and other events are often scheduled. One coming up soon is Owl Day.

The day is a chance to learn and celebrate everything about owls. Attendees will meet the program owls who live at the sanctuary, and learn more about the various species in informative and entertaining talks. Planned activities include taking hikes in owl territory, making owl decorations and pins, and even dissecting owl pellets (these are the parts of their food the owls cannot digest, such as bones). They regurgitate them in the form of pellets, which are different to droppings and do not have any odor. Dissecting them shows what the owl has eaten.

The sanctuary's 2020 Owl Day is November 7, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. The sanctuary is at 545 Beech Creek Road South in Brentwood. Tickets are $36 for a family of four; $18 for an adult accompanied by a child; and $10 for individuals. Children two and younger are admitted free. Flyer printing can provide informative handouts for events like this.
