Attempts to solve traffic problems in Franklin led to the controversial topic of roundabouts being discussed.
A recent meeting of Franklin's Board of Mayor and Aldermen centered on the subject of roundabouts on Royal Oaks Boulevard and Liberty Pike.
Traffic is frequently congested at the point where Royal Oaks turns into Mallory Lane, which is near Centennial High School, and close to the commercial area along Murfreesboro Road. A roundabout at that point, and a second at Stanwick Drive and Liberty, were already approved, but have now drawn opposition.
Two of the city's officials revealed that their constituents are concerned about the safety issue associated with these types of traffic control devices. The objections appear to be due to the fact one of the roundabouts would connect residential and commercial areas. Another official said they have never been in favor of roundabouts, while still another supports them, saying that in Franklin's case, they are a good option.
Eric Stuckey, the city administrator, said emergency vehicles such as fire trucks would be able to safely traverse the roundabout, as would school buses. Paul Holzen, the city engineer, agreed, saying roundabouts are usually more effective in reducing congested traffic than intersections with Signs.
Ultimately, the board approved the design. Print shops could create mailers in cases like this, to inform residents of the decision, and the advantages of the roundabouts.
