Spartanburg to develop mixed-income apartment building

A project to develop apartments in the Mary H. Wright school building has been approved by the Spartanburg City Council.

There will be 53 units in the apartment building, 11 of which will be reserved for affordable and/or workforce housing, with the remaining 42 units to be listed at market rate.

Such an apartment building will create the type of mixed income housing the Council is trying to promote. City leaders feel that it could benefit those in the southside of Spartanburg where there is a need for increased equity for impoverished people and improving their living experience. Chris Story, City Manager, said there are additional benefits of this project. It would provide full historic restoration with an investment of $11m. He added that it would also increase the property value of those living nearby and increase the demand in the southside for more retail and residential development.

Montgomery Development LLC will be running the project, which will have 25% minority contractors, all of whom will be from Spartanburg County.

The school building has been vacant for the past five years and is currently owned by a company in Ohio. No date has been set as to when the project would begin.
