Trustees of Spartanburg School District 2 recently approved a measure to be placed on the November ballot in its general election for building a new Boiling Springs High School.
The new school would be built at the site of the current school and the ballot asks voters to enable the borrowing of $120m by the district to fund the new school. Some of that money would also go towards renovating the current high school building so it can be used in the future as a campus for the ninth grade. In addition, the athletic facilities, including the football stadium, would be renovated as part of the funding.
According to the Superintendent of the District, Scott Mercer, due the limit of the debt service of the district, the district is able to borrow the money, repay it over a period of 25 years, and not have any impact on the wallets of taxpayers. However, he added, borrowing on a long-term basis requires the approval of voters.
Jumper, Carter, Sease Architecture, based in West Columbia, will be designing the new school, led by Todd Sease, principal architect. Sease said that teachers and principals will be involved in design meetings in the near future.
