Spartanburg to be home to new smaller scale market

A new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at Cedar Springs in Spartanburg is scheduled to open next week.

Brad Dodson, who is responsible for the planning and merchandising of the store, has confirmed that he is getting the place ready for customers. Shelves are being stocked with general merchandise and groceries.

As opposed to a Supercenter or traditional Wal-Mart store, both of which focus on general merchandise and a small offering of grocery products, a Neighborhood Market concentrates more on groceries and limits its general merchandise. Most of the products offered are food, paper goods, pet products, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

In addition, at his location, there will be 100 people hired, with an increase in the number of those at the register and associates available on the sales floor for assistance. He commented that he wanted to have enough people to ensure that customers will feel they come first.

The store is 42,000 square feet in size and is part of a development of 55,000 square feet, with an additional seven units for restaurants and retail shops. Dodson remarked that the space seems larger, with a very open layout and lots of space for customers.

With an opening date of August 5, Dodson may be turning to flyer printing companies to create informative Flyers on the products that will be offered in the store and describe how it differs from a traditional Wal-Mart store.
