The initial order of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) of the United States Postal Service has been placed with Oshkosh Defense, which will start production of the vehicles in Spartanburg.
The Postal Service has ordered 50,000 vehicles at a cost of $2.98 billion, At least 10,019 of these vehicles will be battery-electric vehicles with zero emissions. The contract was won by Oshkosh Defense in February 2021 to produce this fleet of up to 165,000 vehicles.
The company then selected Spartanburg as the location for producing these vehicles. It will invest $155 million in renovating what was once a distribution center for Rite-Aid at Flatwood Industrial Park. Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform the community of upcoming projects. More than 1,000 jobs will be created with this project. Preparation of the site is already underway.
John Bryant, president of Oshkosh Defense, said that both fuel-efficient low-emission internal combustion vehicles and zero emission battery electric vehicles will be manufactured for the Postal Service. He added that there is flexibility in the contract to change the number of emission battery electric vehicles to be produced even after the funding is provided. A spokesperson for Oshkosh Defense, Alexandra Little, expressed excitement about being able to fulfill the needs of the NGDV program.
Production on the vehicles is scheduled to begin in the summer of next year.
