What's Happening in Spartanburg, SC…

Officials from the city of Spartanburg said that it is possible for construction to begin soon on a proposed redevelopment of Morgan Square downtown.

Chris Story, city manager, said that the project is expected to cost $1.5 million and will host a wide variety of activities and make the area more friendly to pedestrians. He said that the redevelopment will include an enlarged performance lawn at the eastern end of the square with a visitor kiosk that will be staffed and public restrooms and a new orientation of the stage that will accommodate up to 800 people. There will also be an outdoor dining zone for restaurants in the area, bench swings and movable furniture, and lounging terraces.

Banner printing is often used at such sites to inform residents of such projects and their benefits for a city.

Morgan Square has been through several iterations over the past few decades. It currently has one street blocked to car traffic for outdoor dining. Story said that Morgan Square is now preparing for another transformation in its history as it endeavors to reflect the character and needs of the downtown. He said it should be like a living room in the heart of the city.

Construction on the project could begin in either late spring or early summer depending on authorization from the City Council. Once begun, the project should take about 10 months to complete.
