Rite Aid recently announced that it will be closing its distribution center in Charlotte and opening a larger one in Spartanburg. This is expected to go online in about 12 months’ time.
The new facility will measure 900,000 square feet and cost the company $90m. The South Carolina Power Team, in conjunction with Broad River Electric Cooperative, will be giving Rite Aid a $525,000 grant for infrastructure improvements, and the state has also approved tax credits for the construction.
The distribution center will move 350 jobs from the Charlotte center, create 600 openings in Spartanburg, and supply 1,000 Rite Aid stores in the Southeast. Local Stationery printers will be kept busy in printing materials for those in the new center.
Rite Aid CEO John Standley said in a statement that the location of the new distribution center along the Interstate 85 corridor in Spartanburg is ideal, as it will improve the operating efficiency of the company. He added that the state had been cooperative and supportive during the process in which Rite Aid selected its site for the new facility.
