The Spartanburg Area Conservancy recently hosted Bonnamoo at the Cleveland Preserve Farm in Spartanburg.
The event featured a variety of Southern delicacies, including a banana leaf stuffed with charred okra and trout, pineapples and onions smoked in a fire pit, grass-fed beef raised on the property, and a cassoulette with juniper berries, field peas, and house-made sausage from Cribbs Kitchen. The owner of Cribbs, William Cribb, managed the three cooking stations on the field.
There was also cornbread on the menu, Colonial Milling grits, and trout served with butter.
The executive director of the Spartanburg Area Conservancy, Andrew Waters, said this was a fundraising event, the proceeds of which will go toward helping the nonprofit land trust to work with owners to play a part in conserving farmland. So far, over 5,000 acres of farmland have been preserved. Events such as this one can use poster printing to inform the community of the efforts of organizations and their fundraising endeavors.
There were several performances during the meal, including Janeen Scott of Spartanburg who sang songs of folk artists, as well as some of her original pieces. The Shane Pruitt Band and Southern Culture on the Skids also performed at the event.
Waters said he hopes to hold the event again next year to help showcase sustainable farming practices.
