Spartanburg considers conversion of unused parking garage

Plans are in the works for a vacant piece of property in downtown Spartanburg, and city leaders are involved in the proceedings.

The lower level of the Magnolia Street Parking Garage, which spans 4,500 square feet, has not been used in 10 years and city leaders want to re-purpose it.

Christopher George, Communication Director for the city of Spartanburg, said that this is a rare opportunity to put this type of adaptive reuse into practice. He said that the building once had a useful purpose in its time, but now is the ideal time to determine a new use for the space that can serve the public.

George’s suggestion is that creating a restaurant there could go a long way in revitalizing that part of town. He mooted that some of the space could be used for outdoor patio seating, which would attract more people to the restaurant and build energy on the street.

City decision-makers are currently negotiating with several restaurants that have expressed an interest in moving into the space. Local Print shops can contribute to the effort in attracting businesses in these cases by creating Flyers and other printed materials outlining the site’s features and benefits.

The plan is that the garage should be converted into its new use by the end of this year.
