Hatcher Garden and The South Carolina Wildlife Federation have partnered with the Oshkosh Defense Spartanburg Assembly to create a new wildlife preserve.
The Oshkosh Defense Spartanburg Assembly is a company in Spartanburg that specializes in manufacturing. The preserve is a new initiative that is expected to benefit many communities in the Upstate.

The preserve is just outside the doors of the plant at Oshkosh, and it covers the entire property. Trent McJunkin, Defense Facilities and Maintenance Manager at Oshkosh, said that it has a little bit of everything with perennials, trees, bird Boxes, and shrubs and is very cool to see a manufacturing plant amidst what would be occurring naturally. He said that the company began the preserve earlier this summer and they have installed 500 plants since then and plan to install more plants this fall.
The nest boxes have supported the repopulation of birds such as killdeer and geese as well as small mammals. He explained that this initiative encourages communities to fight back against the loss of habitats and to work together. He added that the company will take care of the preserve for the first year and then it will become self-sustaining for the most part after that.
McJunkin said that it will be the spring when the wildlife preserve reaches its full potential.
