Work has begun in Spartanburg County for the undertaking of the federal census.
Director of information services with the Public Libraries of Spartanburg County, Andy Flint, said that $200,000 in federal funding for South Carolina over the next 10 years can be lost for each person that is not counted in the state. Flint is in charge of the United States Census for 2020.
The Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, city and county officials, and the United Way of Piedmont are supporting Flint with his early efforts in this endeavor. Flint has also attended many events in the area, including National Night Out, to inform people that the Constitution mandates this head count every 10 years and that it also determines the number of seats in the House of Representatives which each state is allowed.
Such efforts often turn to Print shops to help get the word out about their significance.
There will be three ways that people can participate in the census. They can use a computer, call in, or use a paper questionnaire. Although the official census taking process begins on April 1, 2020, residents in the county will soon be receiving notices about the process and asking for their response by March 12. Temporary workers will start going door to door by the end of April for those who do not respond by the deadline.
